Sudan Warns Safety of Peacekeepers Could be Compromised if President Indicted for War Crimes

Sudan issued a stern warning to UN and African Union peacekeepers in Darfur on Friday, declaring their safety would not be guaranteed if President Omar al-Bashir was indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court.

It has been several weeks since the ICC prosecutor asked judges in The Hague to issue an arrest warrant for al-Bashir, declaring the president was responsible for much o the violence that has ravaged the Darfur region.

A decision by the judges isn’t expected for several more weeks but if they do issue an arrest warrant for al-Bashir the government has said they would not be held responsible for the safety of UN and UA peacekeepers in Darfur.
