Randy Pausch, "The Last Lecture" Author, Dies of Cancer at 47

Randy Pausch, the Carnegie-Mellon University professor and famed author of "The Last Lecture," died Friday at age 47. Pausch had been suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Pausch's death occurred at his family's home in Chesapeake, Virginia, where he moved to be closer to family.

Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, co-founded the school's Entertainment Technology Center. He was considered an expert on virtual reality as he helped to develop the Alice 3D-animation software.

In 2006, Pausch was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer. A year later, he embarked on a lecture series at the university in which professors were allowed to speak frankly.

In his famed 2007 speech, "Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," Pausch gathered hundreds of onlookers as he spoke about his childhood dreams and offered words of hope and faith. The speech received national attention and later became the critically-acclaimed book, "The Last Lecture".

After 10 million people viewed his "Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" speech and his book "The Last Lecture" was on the New York Times bestsellers' list, Pausch was invited on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Throughout his later time after his diagnosis, Pausch also maintained a blog to speak on his everyday life and thoughts. His blog was located on his faculty website: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/.

Pausch received his bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Brown University and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. Professor Pausch was also the author or co-author of five books and over 70 articles.

Pausch is survived by his wife, Jai; three young children, Dylan, 7, Logan, 5, and Chloe, 1; his mother and a sister.
