Maria von Trapp Returns to Sound of Music Home For the First Time

Maria von Trapp has returned to the von Trapp family home for the first time since fleeing with her father Baron von Trapp, stepmother Maria, and her six brothers and sisters.

Maria, the second oldest daughter of Baron von Trapp, returned to the Austrian home just before it opens as a hotel.

“Our whole like is in here, in this house. Especially her in the stairwell, where we always used to slide down the railings,” the 94-year-old tells Reuters.

The story of Baron von Trapp falling in love with aspiring nun Maria Kutschera was made famous by the film ‘Sound of Music.” Kutschera came to the family as a teacher for the children but soon fell in love with von Trapp and married him in 1927.

The von Trapps were forced to flee the Nazi regime and leave their home behind in the late 1930s. Their fortune was lost in 1935 but their singing talent as a family proved to be their savior in more ways than one.

The family escaped Austria after a concert and Maria said she believes singing saved their lives. “Without the singing, we would have never made it to the United States,” she says.
