The gunman holding several people hostage at the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Springs, Maryland has been identified as James Lee. Initial reports said Lee had only one hostage, but law enforcement officials now say he has a “small number” of hostages.
Lee, who may also be armed with an explosive device, entered One Discovery Place around 1 p.m. Wednesday. Authorities were called to the building by a Discovery Channel employee. Police are currently in negotiations with Lee.
Lee has been linked to an online manifesto which rants about humans being “filthy” and "pollutive." The writer also calls on the Discovery Channel to broadcast prime-time shows that come up with "solutions to save the planet.”
"Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what's left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture,” the manifesto says.
"The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupify the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans," the writer says.
The manifesto ends with, "These are the demands and sayings of Lee.”
SWAT teams, ATF agents and bomb technicians from the FBI are at the scene.
