Discovery Channel Gunman Shot by Snipers, Hostages Freed

Police snipers shot a gunman holding three Discovery Channel employees hostage Wednesday. Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger says the suspect, James Lee, was shot and is in custody. His condition is unknown. The three hostages were freed unharmed.

Manger did not address whether Lee was carrying an explosive device as previously reported. Lee entered One Discovery Place, the channel’s headquarters in Silver Springs, Maryland, around 1 p.m. Wednesday and took hostages in the lobby.

Lee has been linked to an online manifesto which rants about humans being “filthy” and "pollutive." The manifesto also calls on the Discovery Channel to broadcast prime-time shows that come up with "solutions to save the planet.”

"Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what's left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture,” the manifesto says.

"The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupify the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans," the writer says.

The manifesto ends with, "These are the demands and sayings of Lee.”
