Irish Cardinal Sean Brady has refused to resign from his position as archbishop of Armagh despite confessing to helping cover up one of the Catholic Church’s most notorious abuse scandals. Earlier this year Brady admitted to hiding evidence from authorities in the 1975 investigation into Father Brendan Smyth. Brady revealed he had two teenagers sign oaths of secrecy after they presented evidence of Smyth’s abuse.
Smyth was arrested and convicted of child abuse in Ireland and the United Kingdom. He died in prison in 1997. In March of this year, Brady apologized for his role in the coverup. He now says he has “moved on” and will continue his job at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh.
“I've moved on there, I think, and I got a lot of support in my decision," he tells CNN.
"I have re-evaluated my position and I have decided to continue as the archbishop of Armagh,” Brady said.
