Peace Talks Between Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Begin on Thursday

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will be meeting in Washington on Thursday with hopes of rekindling peace talks that have been stagnant for nearly two years.

Both Netanyahu and Abbas held private meetings with U.S.  President Barack Obama on Wednesday, giving the American leader the opportunity to encourage both men to find a viable solution and not let the chance of a permanent peace deal “slip away.”

While the men will be addressing peace negotiations the recent violence in the West Bank could make those talks difficult as four Israelis were killed on Tuesday and two more shot and injured on Wednesday. The Islamist group Hamas has claimed responsibility for those attacks and continues to oppose the peace process with Israel.

Israel has already issued warnings to its citizens that Hamas may be preparing to launch a series of attacks in hopes of disrupting the peace talks. While Hamas controls Gaza the group’s authority is not recognized by the U.S., European Union or Israel and because of this they have not been invited to join in Thursday’s talks.

For Abbas, the pressing issue on Thursday may come down to the continued construction of Jewish housing in Palestinian territories. Netanyahu has been juggling the issue for some time and failing to provide Abbas with a concrete answer could cause the Palestinian leader to walk away from the negotiations.

The Talks, hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will also include by Jordan's King Abdullah and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
