Suicide Bombers Target Shiite Pilgrims in Baghdad and Rally in Kirkuk, at least 47 Dead

At least 47 were killed and more than 240 injured after a Shiite pilgrimage in Baghdad and a rally in Kirkuk were rocked by suicide bombers and a roadside bomb on Monday.

The religious procession just north of Baghdad attracted several thousand religious worshippers who were taking part in an annual celebration of an eighth-century Shiite saint, Imam Moussa ibn Jaafar al-Kadhim.

Three blasts rocked the pilgrimage as the worshipers were heading to the Kadhimaya shrine honoring the saint.

The majority of those killed were women and children. Authorities believe the suicide bombers were likely women who were able to hide explosives under their garments.

In the northern city of Kirkuk at least 22 were killed after a suicide bomber targeted a crowd of Kurdish protesters angry of recent elections.
