Powerful Typhoon Strikes Taiwan, China in Path

Typhoon Fung Wong struck Taiwan in the early hours Monday dumping large amounts of rain and driving 105 mph winds across the island, causing floods and landslides that killed at least one man.

Air traffic in parts of Taiwan was halted and financial institutions were ordered closed as authorities and rescue workers surveyed the damage and labored to provide relief to those displaced.

Approximately 26 inches of rain drenched the island causing landfalls that blocked roadways and knocked out electricity in several thousand homes. The storm has been blamed for at least one death after a man fell in a flooded rice paddy.

Typhoon Fung Wong is now heading toward China where it is expected to make landfall on Tuesday.
