At least one worker was injured when an offshore oil rig exploded Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. Coast Guard says all 13 workers on board the Vermilion Oil Rig 380 survived. The rig is owned by Mariner Energy.
It is not yet clear if any oil is leaking from the rig, which is believed to be on fire. Coast Guard official Chris O’Neil said preliminary reports indicate the rig has not been producing oil for the past two months.
Coast Guard, Navy and civilian vessels are making their way to the scene, where 12 of the workers are in the water awaiting rescue. The injured worker has been airlifted to a hospital.
In April, an explosion on a Deepwater Horizon rig killed 11 workers and caused the largest oil spill in United States history.
