Ferrari has issued a recall for their latest supercar, the 458 Italia, after receiving 5 reports of the luxury cars bursting into flames. The Italian carmaker said it will replace a bonding adhesive attaching the heat-shield to the wheel arch with mechanical fasteners. Ferrari believes the “glue” melts, causing the wheel arch housing to be exposed to high temperatures, which may lead to a fire.
A Ferrari spokesperson tells CNN the vehicle would have to be put through “heavy usage” to ignite. "Heavy usage of the car, such as driving very fast down a twisty road or up a mountain, will increase the temperature inside the engine bay," said the spokesperson. "If that is combined with extremely high ambient temperatures, which has been the case throughout Europe especially this summer, then this will cause the defamation of the wheel arch, bringing it closer to the exhaust and causing the car to smoke or ignite."
The five incidents of the $260,000 cars bursting into flames occurred in the United States, Britain, France, Switzerland and China. There were no injuries or deaths.
The recall includes 1,248 458 Italias produced before July 2010.
