Knoxville Church Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, 7 Wounded

A 58-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after opening fire at a Knoxville, Tennessee church Sunday. Jim Adkisson entered Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church Sunday morning reportedly carrying a guitar case. He pulled a 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun out of the guitar case and began shooting into the congregation.

Adkisson killed two church goers and injured seven others. One of the victims, 60-year-old Greg McKendry, is being described as a hero as he reportedly used his body to shield others from the bullets. The second victim, 61-year-old Linda Kraeger, was taken to a nearby hospital where she died several hours after the shooting.

Five other church goers were hospitalized in serious condition. Two others were treated and released from the hospital.

Authorities say many more lives would have been lost if men in the church had not have tackled Adkisson and subdued him until police arrived.

A manifesto hand written by Adkisson was found in his vehicle. It indicated the he intentionally targeted the church because of their apparent liberal beliefs. The letter also blamed the shooting on his frustration about not being able to get a job. He also indicated the he didn’t expect to leave the church alive.

Adkisson is currently being held in jail on $1 million bail. The investigation is on-going.
