With the new slogan “Cut smoking, gain life,” Greece has imposed a nationwide ban on smoking in enclosed public areas. Greek authorities previously attempted to impose the ban, but failed due to consequences for disobeying the ban not being outlined clearly.
This time, a warning will be issued first. The names of offender will be entered into a database. They will receive a fine between $65 and $650 for any offenses after the warning. Business owners will receive a fine between $650 and $12,750. The fine doubles with every repeat offense.
In a statement, Greek Health Minister Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou said the ban is "first and foremost a very big step for health of our public."
"It's a step from which we will see the beneficial effects in the following years. As the slogan of the central campaign states 'We cut smoking, gain life,'" she added.
