Talks between Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party and leading opposition party Movement for Democratic Change have reportedly hit a deadlock after President Robert Mugabe allegedly offered MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai the position of “Third Vice-President,” an idea the party finds insulting.
Representatives of the two parties agreed to talks in South Africa, hosted by President Thabo Mbeki, last week in an effort to resolve Zimbabwe’s recent controversial presidential elections.
Tsvangirai won the elections first round but officials ruled he had not secured a large enough majority to avoid a run-off. During that run-off period Tsvangirai opted to drop out of the race due to a surge in violence against his supporters.
Mugabe claimed victory in the June 27 election and received backlash from the international community for his role in the violence. Since that time several countries have imposed further sanctions specifically targeting Mugabe and those close to the president.
The talks in South Africa were being billed as a hopeful sign that the two opposite sides could come to an agreement that would share power yet Mugabe has shown no sign of opening the door to such an idea. The two representatives of the ZANU-PF party were scheduled to leave South Africa on Monday and it is unclear if the talks will continue.
