According to the U.S. Labor Department another 54,000 jobs were lost in the month of August, pushing the unemployment rate from 9.5% to 9.6%, the third month in a row that figure has increased.
Much of the blame for the increase has been placed on the trimming down of government jobs as the private sector reportedly created 67,000 jobs. Many of those government jobs were tied to the recent U.S. census, temporary positions that ended in August.
In their report the Labor Department also revised previous unemployment figures, noting July job losses went down from 131,000 to 54,000 while June figures dipped from 221,000 to 175,000.
In addition to a drop in government employment the manufacturing industry took another hit as employment fell by 27,000 jobs. Healthcare, construction and mining sectors all saw a rise in their employment figures.
