It may be new to you, but for more than two decades we’ve been observing a national Recovery Month, and this September the tradition continues. The theme of this year’s event, “Now More Than Ever,” hints at how far we’ve come and how much work is left to be done, providing treatment resources and help for those battling drug or alcohol addiction.
The month-long observance highlights “the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible,” according to recoverymonth.gov. “The observance also encourages citizens to take action to help expand and improve the availability of effective substance abuse treatment for those in need.”
Why Dedicate a Month to Recovery?
While the need to focus attention on addiction and recovery is important every month, setting aside time each year to focus on the issues related to recovery gives experts and everyday people in the world of recovery and treatment a platform to highlight what’s working. This provides an opportunity to educate the public about the ins and outs of treatment and the warning signs of substance abuse. And while addiction remains a problem in the U.S. and around the world, treatment providers have made significant strides, transforming the lives of thousands of Americans.
“These successes often go unnoticed by the broader population,” the recoverymonth.gov website says, adding that, “Recovery Month provides a vehicle to celebrate these successes.”
The celebration of successes and education of the public will continue throughout the month of September, hoping to show that this national health crisis is treatable and recovery is possible.
