Strong 7.4 Earthquake Strikes New Zealand

A massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 20 miles west of Christchurch on the South Island.

Widespread damage and power outages were reported, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths. Local media outlets reported ongoing aftershocks.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there is “no destructive widespread tsunami threat." No other details were available.
