Valdosta, Georgia Wins ESPN's "Titletown USA" Award

Valdosta, GA won the Titletown USA online competition by ESPN, according to reports on Monday.

On Monday, the Titletown USA trophy was awarded to former five-time Pro Bowler Jessie Tuggle, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame after starring for Valdosta State University. The announcement came during Monday's 6 p.m. edition of Sportscenter.

Valdosta High School is the winningest high school football program in the United States with 838 wins, including six national championships and 23 Georgia state championships. Archrival Lowndes High School has won three of last four state football titles. Valdosta State University, a Division II powerhouse, has won two national championships in football in last four years.

Overall, the city of Valdosta has won 394 team championships on the high school and college levels.

Parkersburg, West Virginia was second, followed by Green Bay, Wisconsin; Massillon, Ohio; Boston; and Gainesville, Florida.

In Parkersburg, high school teams have accumulated 183 state championships since 1950. Parkersburg South High School has 38 AAA titles in 40 years, while Parkersburg Catholic had 17 Class A state titles.

ESPN featured the 20 contestants for Titletown USA over the last month, focusing on a different city each day.
