Talks between Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party and leading opposition Movement for Democratic Change party have adjourned according to South African President Thabo Mbeki, a shift from earlier reports that the two sides were deadlocked after days of discussion.
The two parties agreed to meet in South Africa in hopes of working out a deal that would result in a power-sharing agreement yet neither side appears ready to bend on their initial demands.
Despite no agreement in place Mbeki has said the talks were going well and after several days the two sides were returning to Harare where they would consult with their respective parties.
Zimbabwe has been in turmoil since the country’s recent elections in which MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai claimed victory after the first round. While Tsvangirai collected more votes, election officials declared he had not secured a large enough majority to avoid a run-off.
In the second vote President Robert Mugabe was pronounced the winner after Tsvangirai dropped out of the race due to a wave of violence targeting his supporters.
The international community has called for a power-sharing government to be formed in Zimbabwe but neither side appears ready for such a situation. On Monday Tsvangirai was reportedly offered the position of “Third Vice-President,” an offer the MDC found insulting.
MDC leaders have called for the removal of Mugabe, a scenario that appears unlikely as he has held office since Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980.
