British Airways and Iberia Hold Talks, Possible Merger Discussed

UK airline giant British Airways and Spain’s largest airline Iberia are undergoing talks that could result in a merger, something both airlines would favor as a solution to the current crisis in the airline industry.

A merger would allow both airlines to concentrate flights in particular world regions, cutting the high costs associated with duplicate flight schedules. BA would focus its attention on the Middle East while Iberia would retain its strong hold on Latin America as well as Africa.

The two airlines have already established a relationship of co-operation over the past decade.

According to reports the merger, which could take several months, would still allow both countries to have a national carrier. It remains unclear if the merger would result in job losses.
