Sudan Judge Sentences Eight Darfur Rebels to Death

A Sudanese judge has condemned eight Darfur rebels to death following an attack near the country’s capital, Khartoum earlier this year.

The Darfur rebels were members of the Justice and Equality Movement, one of several militant groups that have waged war against the Sudanese government’s alleged favoritism of Arabs. Government officials have accused neighboring Chad of funding and equipping the Darfur rebels, a claim Chad has denied.

The death sentences handed down on Tuesday will have to be approved by an appeals court and Sudan’s top court and then signed by Sudan President Omar al-Bashir.
