Mark Whitaker has been named to replace Tim Russert as head of NBC News' Washington Bureau, according to reports on Tuesday.
Prior to joining NBC last year as senior vice president of news, Whitaker was the editor of Newsweek from 1998-2006. Whitaker, 50, began working with Newsweek as an intern while attending Harvard University in the late 1970s.
As bureau chief, Whitaker will be in charge of "Meet the Press," as well as NBC News' election and political coverage. He also will make occasional appearances as an on-air analyst, NBC said in its announcement Monday.
Whitaker was president of the American Society of Magazine Editors from 2004 to 2006.
Russert died on June 13 after suffering a heart attack while at the Washington bureau. The legendary journalist hosted "Meet the Press" for 17 years. Tom Brokaw came out of retirement to host "Meet the Press" for the remainder of the season until NBC announced Russert's replacement.
