California Earthquake Tops 5.4 on USGS Scale, Hits Chino Hills, LA, San Diego

An earthquake of 5.4 magnitude hit California between Los Angeles and San Diego late Tuesday morning.

The magnitude was downgraded from 5.8 by The Southern California Seismic Network in Pasadena, which consists of the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the Cal Tech Seismological Laboratory. It was then reduced to 5.6 before landing at 5.4.

The earthquake struck at 11:42 a.m. (2:42 p.m. ET) as the quake shook homes, tall buildings and disrupted cell phone service throughout the Los Angeles and San Diego areas.

11 aftershocks have been felt all across Southern California with 3.8 being the largest and the only one felt.

The quake's center was about two miles southwest of Chino Hills, about five miles southeast of Diamond Bar, and 28 miles east-southeast of the Los Angeles Civic Center, which is in downtown Los Angeles, according to Cal Tech and the USGS. Chino Hills is 29 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

The center was about 8.5 miles deep and was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, even rumblings in Las Vegas. There have been no reports of water or power outages.

The earthquake is the biggest California earthquake since September 28, 2004, when a 6.0 quake was recorded south of Parkfield, which is about 70 miles northwest of Bakersfield.

The quake was far less powerful than the Northridge earthquake, which reached 6.7 on the Richter scale, that badly damaged the region on Jan. 17, 1994. The Northridge earthquake killed 72 people, injured more than 9,000 and caused $25 billion.

The USGS said there was a 99 percent chance of California having a magnitude 6.7 or larger within the next 30 years.
