Stocks Extend Rally on Jobs Data and Feds Borrowing Plan

An unexpected rise in private sector jobs, steps by the Federal Reserve to enhance liquidity, and another drop in oil are all working to extend yesterday’s sizeable advance in equities. ADP’s employment report suggests the labor market may not be as soft as feared.

Meanwhile, the price of oil continued its slide, further easing concerns about the impact of inflation on consumer spending and the overall economy. Oil's sharp drop Tuesday contributed to Wall Street's huge rally; light, sweet crude fell 85 cents to $121.34 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In morning trading, the Dow rose 121.32, or 1.06 percent, to 11,518.88. On Tuesday, the Dow rose 266 points, more than wiping out a nearly 240-point loss from the previous session.

Broader stock indicators also rose. The Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 10.62, or 0.84 percent, to 1,273.82, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 9.72, or 0.42 percent, to 2,329.34.

Bond prices fell after the Fed announced its plans and as stocks advanced. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, jumped to 4.12 percent from 4.04 percent late Tuesday.

The dollar was higher against other major currencies, while gold prices fell sharply.

Tuesday’s Top Performing SmallCapVoice.com stocks:
