According to South African President Thabo Mbeki the talks between Zimbabwe’s rival ZANU-PF and Movement for Democratic Change parties will resume on Sunday, just days after a reported deadlock appeared to jeopardize a resolution.
Representatives of the ruling ZANU-PF party and MDC were sent to South Africa to discuss the possibility of a power-sharing government but those talks ended abruptly after reports surfaced that current President Robert Mugabe offered MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai the position of ‘Third Vice-President,” an offer the part found insulting.
Mbeki has been the chief mediator at the talks and has said both sides appeared determined to work out an agreement to end the current crisis in Zimbabwe.
That crisis evolved due to the country’s recent presidential election in which both sides claimed victory. Tsvangirai collected the most votes in the first round on March 29 but election officials declared he had not secured a large enough majority to avoid a run-off.
With less than a week before the June 27 vote Tsvangirai dropped out of the race declaring the election had not been free and fair and blamed Mugabe for wide-scale violence against MDC supporters.
Mugabe was announced the winner of the presidential election and remained in office, a spot he has held since Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. Since the election several countries have instituted sanctions against Zimbabwe, many directly linked to Mugabe and those associated with him.
