Landslides in Guatemala Leave 44 Dead, 16 Missing

Heavy rains from a tropical depression caused landslides in Nahuala, Guatemala on Sunday. The country’s disaster agency said the first landslide pushed several vehicles off a road. A second landslide came down on the same spot.

Officials say at least 44 people were killed – some of them rescuers trying to save those buried in the mud.  Another 56 people were injured and 16 are missing. Constant rains have hampered rescuers from finding the missing. The rain has also damaged thousands of buildings, homes and fields of crops.

President Alvaro Colom declared three days of national mourning on Monday.
