A child took a bomb into their school in Northern Ireland on Monday, causing authorities to evacuate the building. Police say the 8-year-old child found the explosive device outside St. Comgall primary school and took it into their classroom around 8:30 a.m. The building was evacuated around 10:30.
“It’s unbelievable that innocent children should be caught up in something like this,” head-teacher Hilary Cush told BBC News.
“It is by sheer good fortune that we are not dealing with a severely injured child right now," said Chief Inspector Simon Walls.
Walls said “cowardly criminals” were behind the “despicable” incident. Authorities have not released information on whether they have any suspects.
A second school nearby was later evacuated after a warning was called in to a media outlet. There were no injuries in either incident. Both schools are located in Antrim, a town north of the Northern Ireland capital of Belfast.
