HS Basketball: Quinn Cook to Only Miss Five Weeks for Knee Injury

by Kyle "Scoop" Yeldell

Quinn Cook, the star point guard for Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA), suffered just a partial tear in his meniscus and will miss just five weeks, in contrast to previous reports.

Last weekend, Cook suffered a knee injury during the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Classic at Los Angeles’ Venice Beach basketball courts. Last Monday, Cook’s MRI results stated that he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Due to misconceived reports, it was suggested that Cook could miss the entire season, but was actually diagnosed to sit out three to four months. However, in a miraculous twist of fate, it was discovered during his surgery Friday that Cook just partially tore his meniscus and will just miss five weeks.

In the matter of one week, reports concerning Cook’s senior year went from devastating to a sigh of relief, causing those around him to go from tears of sadness to those of joy.

“[Dr. James Gilbert, Cook’s orthopedic surgeon] said ‘I’ve never seen anything like it’,” said Janet Stevens Cook, Quinn’s mother.

Cook tore the meniscus in his other leg after his freshman season at DeMatha Catholic H.S. (Hyattsville, MD) and emerged a better player after his surgery. He and his family expect a similar outcome for Cook, who also endured the passing of his father around the time of his first meniscus surgery.

Cook is now expected to play in the season opener for Oak Hill, which is considered by many to be the favorite as the preseason No. 1 high school team in the country. Cook, who missed his first week of school due to his injury, will travel to the school Tuesday to begin classes.

Cook will now be able to continue his plans for his senior year, which also include taking his official college visits, something that he originally postponed in lieu of his previous diagnosis. In addition, Cook has changed his list of schools, adding Villanova and subtracting Rutgers. He is also looking at Arizona, Duke, Georgetown, North Carolina, St. John’s and UCLA.

Cook is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation by MaxPreps.com and is considered one of the top five point guard prospects in the class of 2011.
