Jacob Zuma, Leader of South Africa’s Ruling ANC Party, Losses Legal Battle

Jacob Zuma, the leader of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress party, failed to prevent incriminating documents from being admitted into court in a case involving corruption charges against him.

Zuma is facing charges related to fraud, corruption, racketeering and money laundering- all tied to an arms deal.

Zuma faced the same charges in 2005 but that case fell apart when the court ruled that thousands of documents seized from his home and other locations were inadmissible. The court found that those documents had been gathered illegally.

That ruling was appealed and last year the Supreme Court ruled the documents could be used in the case. On Thursday that decision was upheld after the court found the documents were seized in a legal manner.

In 2005 Zuma’s financial adviser was sentenced to 15 years in prison for soliciting a bribe on behalf of Zuma in relation to the arms deal.

Zuma has denied all charges, claiming they were politically motivated. He is expected in court next week.
