MDC Leader Morgan Tsvangirai Optimistic about Power-Sharing Talks with ZANU-PF

Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of Zimbabwe’s main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party, has said he is “fairly satisfied” with the ongoing power-sharing talks being held between his party and the ruling ZANU-PF party led by President Robert Mugabe.

Those talks, being held in South Africa and led by President Thabo Mbeki, appeared doomed when both sides declared a deadlock just days ago but they are scheduled to resume on Sunday and Tsvangirai has expressed hope that an agreement can be reached.

Initial reports indicated the talks would be spread over two weeks but Tsvangirai recently said “Two weeks may appear too short, but it is not inflexible and I am sure that the facilitation will adjust as progress moves forward.”

The talks were initiated after a bitter presidential election in which Tsvangirai claimed Mugabe used violence as a means of suppressing MDC supporters. Tsvangirai won the first round of the election but officials said he did not secure a large enough majority to avoid a run-off.

In that second round a surge of violence against MDC supporters led Tsvangirai to drop his bid for the presidency. The MDC alleged that more than 120 supporters were killed and another 200,000 were displaced over the course of the election.
