addiction rate after the first-time use of methamphetamines (NPR), education
about this national addiction crisis is urgently needed. The
professional team at Journey Healing Centers will host these events at
their offices in Scottsdale, Arizona (Wed, Sept 8th, 6-7pm) and Salt
Lake City, Utah (Thurs, Sept 16th, 6-7pm) (event details: http://journeyrecoverycenters.com).
These Meth Substance Abuse Awareness Nights will highlight the issues, warning signs and treatment options to assist the client/patient, family, friends, workplace and community heal together. “Meth use will never produce positive outcomes in a person’s life although one might feel that is does temporarily,” explains Jamie Gordon, Clinical Assistant at Journey Healing Centers. Methamphetamine’s immediate rush and sustained high of the inhaled drug makes the drug very addictive. Side effects can include social challenges, tooth decay, tooth loss, babies born addicted from their mother’s milk and even death. On top of the physical symptoms, psychological symptoms can include aggressiveness, irritability, paranoia, and insomnia causing the person to be a possible harm to not only themselves, but also others. According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the number of domestic lab incidents is increasing at a significant rate of approximately 25% per year in the United States, with the largest increases in the South and Midwest. In March 2009, there were 966 meth lab incidents nationwide, compared to 756 incidents in March 2008 and 596 incidents in March 2007, which makes these educational events even more urgent.
To assist thousands of teens going back to school, Journey Healing Centers is also providing insights on meth addiction in Listen Magazine’s September issue that will be distributed worldwide to high schools this week. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 10.4 million Americans aged 12 or older used methamphetamine at least once in their lifetimes
“Recovery Month serves to educate the public on substance abuse as a national health crisis, that addiction is a treatable disease, and that recovery is possible (http://recoverymonth.gov).” Journey Healing Centers will also host events for Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness and College Substance Abuse Awareness in September.
