Turn in drugs, no questions asked

Drug take-back scheduled in Connecticut

In conjunction with the National Drug Take-Back Day on September 25, 2010 that is being sponsored by the National Drug Enforcement Administration, the city of Ridgefield, CT is holding its own local Drug Take-Back Day.

The Drug Take-Back is designed to allow individuals to safely rid their medicine cabinets of prescription medications that have either expired or that are no longer used.

“Drug take-backs are an excellent way for individuals to dispose of their unwanted prescription and non-prescription medications so that others will be prevented from potentially abusing these medications,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Addiction treatment professionals in our area have recently reported that within the past year, the numbers of young people who have entered inpatient rehab for prescription drug addiction is unlike anything they’ve seen in the past 25 years. Obviously, we find that upward trend very alarming. Often times, we forget what may be in our medicine cabinets because, once we are no longer suffering from our ailment, the last thing we think about are the remaining pills in a bottle. Drug take-backs remind us to go and take a look in our medicine cabinets and cupboards to see what, if any, potentially dangerous drugs are remaining. Even if we don’t find any, at the very least our awareness to the dangers of prescription drug abuse is increased.”

In the past, prescription drug take-backs have yielded 10 to 15 gallons of pills alone which, hopefully, will aid in lowering one of the most alarming statistics recently reported: according to a national study, statistics show that in Connecticut, prescription drug use now kills more people under the age of 34 than car accidents.
