Alcohol abuse statistics on the rise

America sees alcohol use and abuse on the rise

Alcohol abuse is on the rise across America and, with this increased abuse of alcohol, the need for effective alcoholism treatment and drug abuse prevention is necessary.

Throughout history, alcohol abuse has been known to be directly proportional to the state of the economy. As the economic environment falters, substance abuse increases. The solution to such abuse is a long-term strategy best defined by professionals equipped to deal with addiction disorders.

It’s estimated that 21 percent of adults are consuming alcohol at a rate of more than four drinks per day. The rate of that consumption puts them in a group considered “at risk”. In addition, more than 10 per cent of adults are considered to have an alcohol use disorder.

“Statistics like these get our attention,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “When you begin speaking of alcohol consumption in the near 30 drinks per week range, there’s clearly a problem in America. And, many experts think that much of it has to do with the state of the economy. Historically speaking, economic downturns resulted in an increase in alcohol consumption. This economic environment is proving to be no different. The positive in all of this is that we are aware that there is a problem; now we must make certain that we address the problem promptly in order to affect change.”

The impact of increased alcohol consumption is dramatic. It’s estimated that, in one Eastern seaboard state alone, 10-12 percent of adults are driving while under the influence of alcohol and that approximately 90 percent of adults arrested and imprisoned, suffer from some sort of substance abuse problem. While those statistics are alarming, it’s important to realize that effective drug rehab is available for those in need.
