NASA’s Phoenix Lander Identifies Water in Mars Soil Sample

NASA can rejoice as its Phoenix Lander has identified water in a Mars soil sample collected from the planet’s surface.

While images of ice had been collected in the past, the Phoenix Lander confirmation is the first time NASA has gained scientific proof of water.

The problem with transferring samples to a lab had hampered the Phoenix Lander’s previous attempts to analyze collected material. With that problem remedied, the Lander was able to collect some dry soil that happened to contain ice and tests proved the waters existence.

NASA landed the Phoenix Lander on June 25 to investigate whether Mars was ever capable of supporting life. Now that its early flaws have been worked out scientists have opted to extend the craft’s stay on the planet for an addition 90 days.
