Boulder, Colorado authorities say 12 of the 20 people believed to be missing in a wildfire that broke out Monday have been located. Of the 8 that are still missing, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Commander Rick Brough says “many of those were people who did not evacuate.”
So far, police have been able to confirm 54 homes were destroyed. A list of those homes was posted online Tuesday night. The number of homes damaged or destroyed is expected to grow.
Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter declared a state of emergency Tuesday. "It is important right now for people who've been evacuated to just be patient. This is a very volatile situation, it would be fair to say. There is a fire line. They are doing all they can to contain the fire line. At the same time, there are a fair number of embers that are also starting smaller fires,” Ritter said.
The wildfire started Monday about 6 miles north of Boulder. The sheriff’s department is investigating a report that a ruptured propane tank may have started the blaze.
As of Wednesday, the fire was covering 6,168 acres.
