Anthrax Mail Suspect Bruce Ivins Commits Suicide

A top U.S. biodefense researcher who was a suspect in the 2001 anthrax mailings has apparently committed suicide. Bruce E. Ivins killed himself just before the Justice Department was set to file criminal charges against him in the anthrax mailings that killed five people.

The 62-year-old, who has worked at the government’s biodefense lab for the past 18 years, died at Fredrick Memorial Hospital Tuesday after overdosing on prescription Tylenol mixed with codeine.

Ivins’ laboratory had been the center of the FBI’s investigation into the anthrax attack, which followed the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Friends and family close to Ivins have refused to comment on his death. Authorities haven’t released any information either.
