Chinese President Hu Jintao Urges Non-Politicized Olympic Games

With the Beijing Olympic Games just one week away Chinese President Hu Jintao has appealed to the international community to not politicize the Games but rather promote peace and friendship.

President Hu stressed during a news conference that using the Beijing Games as a political platform would undermine the very nature of the two-week event.

China has faced criticism from various groups due to allegations of human rights violations and media suppression. President Hu answered those charges saying, “It is only inevitable that people from different countries and regions may not see eye to eye with one another on some different issues.”

During the news conference the President also addressed journalist concerns over limited Internet access during the Games. While China has made sites not normally accessible, available to the media, he followed by stating, “We also hope you will provide objective reports of what you see here.”
