Mayor of El Naranjo, Mexico Assassinated

Alexander Lopez Garcia, the mayor of El Naranjo in the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosi, was killed by gunmen in his office on Wednesday. Government officials say four gunmen with hoods over their heads pulled up to a municipal building around 1:30 p.m. Two of the men stood guard outside the building while the other two entered and shot Garcia in his office.

After Garcia’s assassination, Mexican President Felipe Calderon vowed to “continue working for the security of the citizens, with all the available resources of the state.”

The killing is believed to be the work of a drug cartel. No other details were available.
