US Marines Seize German Ship Captured by Pirates

U.S. Marines captured 9 pirates after seizing control of a German vessel on Thursday. Twenty four members of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Maritime Raid Force boarded the M/V Magellan Star around 5 a.m. local time. According to a Navy spokesperson, the pirates surrendered “within minutes” and no one was hurt.

The pirates captured the vessel off the coast of Somalia on Wednesday. The ship sent out a distress call during the attack. A Turkish frigate and combined task force flagship was the first to respond. The USS Dubuque, which was carrying the Maritime Raid Force, and the USS Princeton, arrived later.

The owner of the Magellan Star gave the U.S. military permission to board the vessel. The vessel’s 11 crew members were locked in a safe room when the marines seized control.

"This successful mission by combined maritime forces secured the safety of the ship's crew and returned control of the ship to the civilian mariners," the U.S. Fifth Fleet said in a statement.
