Physical Therapy is Much More Than Treating Injuries

Preconceived notions point to the fact that physical therapy is all about rehabilitation for injuries or disability due to chronic illness. Due to recent advancements the time has come to abolish these notions and stand up and take notice of what a physical therapist really does in modern medicine and health and wellness.

The idea of physical therapy and some of the perceptions people have regarding what a physical therapist does are rapidly becoming outdated.  The conclusions people draw about physical therapy being only for the injured or disabled is being tossed to the fore winds as advancement in modern medicine and health awareness take a front row seat to the overall health and well-being of individuals.  For this reason the physical therapy profession has advanced along with the renovations in modern medicine prompting professionals to rethink the way physical therapists can better contribute to the overall health and wellness of every individual.

The image that people have in their minds dates back an entire century when physical therapy was originally used to treat polio before the profession gradually expanded to hospitals, outpatient facilities, and nursing homes.  When you think about it, life in general and the medical was much different than it is today and was void of the technology medical professionals have access to in the present day. So it only stands to reason that the physical therapy profession would ride the waves of advancement along with other medical professions

Physical therapists are highly educated professionals who can now help all individuals achieve good health and wellness regardless if they are injured, disabled, or trying to remedy some of their health concerns.  They are genuinely concerned about the health and wellness of their patients including the ones who are simply searching for support for an appropriate health and fitness plan.

Physical therapists are licensed to help people overcome weight problems, dietary issues, and nutrition concerns.  Many are surprised when they discover physical therapists offer assistance in these areas in addition to treating patients with injuries or disabilities that result from chronic illness.

What’s more is many people are paying an annual visit to their physical therapist for a checkup because they receive a personalized health and wellness plan that is tailored to the status of their personal health level.  This delivers much better results than a ‘one size fits all’ type of program.  The program a physical therapist recommends is based on an overall health evaluation when patients schedule an initial appointment.

Evidence points to the fact that physical therapists are licensed to help individuals in many ways and it is not just about injuries and disabilities anymore. So as far as old preconceived notions with regard to physical therapy go, it is time to let them fall by the wayside and start rethinking how a physical therapist can help patients achieve and maintain optimum health and increase their chances of longevity.
