At Least 140 Dead in India after Stampede at Temple

At least 140 people were crushed to death on Sunday after a metal railing broke along a mountainous path causing scores of worshippers attending a Hindu festival in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh to pile into a confined space.

According to reports the railing broke along a narrow path in which worshippers were passing. After the rail broke hundreds panicked and rushed into a small area, suffocating the victims.

The festival of Shravan Navratras, in the district of Bilsapur, is a nine day event in which upwards of 50,000 worshippers trek to the Nainadevi temple to make offerings.
