Zimbabwe Talks between ZANU-PF and MDC Leaders Resume in South Africa

Leaders of Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party and main opposition Movement for Democratic Change have resumed their discussions surrounding a power-sharing deal.

Sunday’s talks ended a brief break in which both sides appeared deadlocked but South African President Thabo Mbeki, moderator of the discussions, confirmed that the two sides were back at the table.

Zimbabwe has been in chaos since the recent presidential election resulted in another term for Robert Mugabe, head of the ZANU-PF party. MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai collected more votes in the first round held in March but election officials declared he had not secured a large enough majority to take office.

In the second round Tsvangirai dropped out of the race with less than a week before the June vote after accusing Mugabe and his party of using violence to intimidate MDC supporters.
