At Least Nine Climbers Killed Attempting to Tackle K2 Summit

At last nine climbers have died and rescue workers fear more fatalities could be reported after an avalanche in north Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second-highest peak.

Near the summit of the 28,251 peak there was an ice break in an area known as the Bottleneck that swept snow down the mountain that buried at least nine climbers on Friday.

The avalanche snapped traveling lines used by the climbers, leaving several more stranded and making rescue attempts difficult. Those rescue workers didn’t hear about the climbers fate until those in the expedition made it back to camp Saturday evening.

Among those believed killed were three Koreans, two Nepalese, a Serbian, a Dutch, Norwegian and a Frenchman.
