Donald Trump has offered to buy the Manhattan site of the controversial Ground Zero mosque. The Celebrity Apprentice host is offering 25 percent more than the owners paid for the site. Trump also stipulates that the owners must agree to build their mosque at least 5 more blocks away from the World Trade Center site.
"I am making this offer as a resident of New York and citizen of the United States, not because I think the location is a spectacular one (because it is not), but because it will end a very serious, inflammatory and highly divisive situation that is destined, in my opinion, to only get worse. Hopefully, something good can happen!” Trump wrote in a letter to Hisham Elzanaty, who owns 51 percent of the property.
A lawyer for Elzanaty has called Trump’s offer a “pathetic” attempt for publicity and says his client has refused. Elzanaty plans to hold on to the property as he thinks it may be worth more in the future.
Trump has not commented.
