Plutonium Leak at Austrian Nuclear Plant

A plutonium leak at a facility just south of Vienna, Austria has been contained and officials have said no-one is at risk.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency “Pressure build-up in a small sealed sample bottle in a storage safe resulted in plutonium contamination of a storage room... at the IAEA's Safeguards Analytical Laboratory in Seibersdorf.”

Just last year the agency had warned officials at the Seibersdorf facility that their infrastructure was outdated and posed safety concerns.

There was no detection of radioactivity in the air following the leak as the facility’s air filters contained any radioactivity.
