"Monster of Montauk", the recent Internet sensation, was identified as a dog by scientists, according to Fox News on Monday.
According to the scientist who called into Fox News on Monday morning, the "Montauk Monster" is a dog who fell off of a family boat and while in the water, its nose was bitten off by a snapping turtle. The "monster" died in the water and was washed ashore along a beach in Montauk, a city on New York's Long Island.
The "monster" laid on the beaches with almost no hair, rugged canine teeth, but with a bluish-purple-and-pinkish-red hue.
Several onlookers took pictures of it, sending the pics via e-mail on Wednesday. The photos became viral, and the creature was then dubbed the "Monster of Montauk" and the "Montauk Monster", depending on the publication.
Many believed that it is a sea turtle without a shell or the remnants of the nearby Plum Animal Disease Center, a government animal-testing facility where they investigate diseases. However, until Monday, no scientific specialist had yet to identify what animal or creature this "Montauk Monster" truly is.
