Stocks Are Lower on Inflation Report
Stocks are easing in early action amid general jitters about the economy. Economic releases will be on the light side this week, but the Fed’s rate decision and policy statement out on Tuesday afternoon is quickly taking center stage. On the economic front, personal spending and income exceeded expectations, while a closely watched measure of inflation rose more than forecast.
In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 63.02, or 0.56 percent, to 11,263.30.
Broader stock indicators also declined. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 3.43, or 0.27 percent, to 1,246.88, and the Nasdaq composite index declined 9.02, or 0.39 percent, to 2,301.94.
Bond prices fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.97 percent from late Friday's 3.94 percent.
Many on Wall Street will likely trade cautiously ahead of the Federal Reserve's policymaking meeting on Tuesday. The Fed is expected to keep interest rates steady at 2 percent, given the recent weak readings on the economy.
The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.
Light, sweet crude fell 61 cents to $124.49 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
