Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) has named Sanjay Jha, the chief operating officer of Qualcomm, to head its handset division.
Jha will also be co-chief executive officer (CEO) of the parent company, sharing the responsibility with Greg Brown. Brown was also named CEO of Motorola's Broadband Mobility Solutions unit, which consists of the Home & Networks Mobility and Enterprise Mobility Solutions businesses.

As COO of Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM), Jha, 45, was responsible for the company's corporate and research development and Qualcomm's Flarion Technologies. He also served as president of Qualcomm's CDMA (code division multiple access) technologies. He joined the company in 1994.
Executive vice president Len Lauer, formerly the chief operating officer of Sprint Nextel Corp., replaces Jha as COO of Qualcomm. Steve Mollenkopf will move from his EVP post to fill Jha's position as president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT).
Billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who unsuccessfully tried to gain a seat on the Motorola board in 2007, has been pressuring the company to get rid of its handset division for more than a year. Icahn is Motorola's single largest shareholder.
After introducing the successful RAZR model in 2004, Motorola has struggled to launch another hit cell phone, causing them to drop from the No. 2 spot among dominant handset makers. Nokia and Samsung are now the top two handset manufacturers.
Motorola's RAZR2 V8, the successor to 2004's RAZR, the RAZR V3r and V3t are amongst the company's most popular models currently.
