Morgan Freeman in Serious Condition After Car Accident in Mississippi

Morgan Freeman is listed in serious condition after being involved in a car accident in Ruleville, MS late Sunday night.

Freeman, who stars in the blockbuster Batman hit "The Dark Knight," and fellow passenger Demaris Meyer were involved in a car accident around 11:30 pm near Ruleville, a small town in Mississippi's Tallahatchie County.

Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima belonging to Meyer eastbound on State Highway 32 near Ruleville when the car left the road and flipped several times.

The doors were jammed on the vehicle during the crash. Officials rescued Freeman and Mayer from the wrecked Maxima using the "jaws of life" apparatus.

Freeman, 71, was airlifted from the scene to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, TN, where he was listed in serious condition. The condition for Meyer, who is from Memphis, is unknown.

Freeman was conscious as he was pulled him from the car, according to Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel in Charleston, MS, who was on the scene of the accident.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident. A spokesperson from the Mississippi Highway Patrol said that no charges have been filed against Freeman.

Freeman was born in Memphis and spent much of childhood in Mississippi. He currently lives in Charleston, a town of just over 2,000 residents. Charleston is about five miles east on Ruleville, the site of the wreck.

Freeman is the co-owner of Ground Zero Blues Club and a restaurant, Madidi, both located in Clarksdale, Miss., which is near where the crash took place.

Freeman won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2005 for his role in "Million Dollar Baby" and was nominated for three others.
