South African President Thabo Mbeki Denies Arms Deal

South African President Thabo Mbeki has denied allegations made by the country’s Sunday Times stating he was involved in an arms deal with a German firm.

According to the Sunday Times, Mbeki made millions in a deal that resulted in a submarine contract yet the president’s office dismissed those charges calling the article a “hotch-potch recycling of allegations that have from time to time been peddled.”

In addition to Mbeki’s denial, the German firm in question, MAN Ferrostaal, has also denied the allegations. The Sunday Times reported MAN Ferrostaal had paid Mbeki 30 million rand to secure the 6 billion rand contract in which three submarines were sold to the South African navy.
